John’s story

“The more I see in life, the older I get, the more I realize we’re all just here on a wing and a prayer. Healthy, wealthy or wise, nothing is guaranteed in this reality. I generally return to a feeling of gratitude. It seems either that or a feeling of desperation. I strongly prefer the former, although I’ve experienced both.”

John Bengston has long been aware of the suffering of others. He saw with the eyes of a child people who had nowhere to go and nothing to eat. He decided to do something to change that and began cooking for others. He joined a group of caring folks who also felt the need to help and served food to those in need for many years at Hartford soup kitchens. John is pictured  with former SPI board member Rose Fichera Eagen.

He contacted the South Park Inn and offered to bring homemade soup for our guests.

John believes in the power of giving back and donates his time and talent throughout Greater Hartford, whether it’s fixing a roof at a local church, leading a youth group, or preparing food for those who are hungry. Coming to South Park Inn to deliver a four-gallon container of homemade soup, he is happy to continue a tradition of feeding the hungry as Rose is now retired. We are grateful to you both for your selfless commitment to serving others and giving hope.
